How Do Clear Aligners Work?

As with any dental procedure, your first step is a complete examination that will normally include scanning the shape of your teeth and taking measurements. This information will be sent to the lab technicians who will plan your progress through a series of clear aligners. They will 3D-print a number of custom aligners that you will wear as your teeth move into their correct positions.

These aligners will be sent to our office and we’ll bring you in to go over how to wear them. We’ll have you try on your first set of aligners and explain when to switch to the next in the series.

You’ll take your numbered aligners home and start wearing the first one day and night, removing them to eat or clean your teeth. After a week or two, you’ll start wearing the next set of aligners, and so on until your treatment is complete and you have a beautiful, even smile.

Our patients tell us how convenient it is that they can remove their aligners for portraits, sports activities, public speaking and other special events.

Clear Aligners FAQs

Clear aligners work similarly to traditional braces, with brackets and wires that apply pressure to your teeth to guide them into the desired position. The primary difference is that clear braces use brackets made of a transparent ceramic material that blends in with your teeth for a more subtle appearance.

The duration of treatment with clear aligners varies depending on the severity of your orthodontic issues. Typically, treatment lasts between 18-24 months.

Yes, clear aligners tend to be more expensive than metal braces due to the use of specialized materials and technology.

Patients with clear braces will need to come in for adjustments approximately every 4-6 weeks.

clear aligners may temporarily affect your speech while you adjust to wearing them. However, most patients adapt quickly and do not experience long-term speech problems.

Yes, you can still eat normally with clear aligners. However, you will need to avoid hard, sticky, or chewy foods that could damage the brackets or wires.

No, clear aligners are typically only suitable for mild-to-moderate orthodontic issues, such as minor gaps or crooked teeth.

Patients with clear aligners should brush and floss after each meal to remove food particles and prevent tooth decay. Orthodontic wax can be used to protect your cheeks and lips from irritation.

Clear aligners are resistant to staining and discoloration, but they can become discolored if you consume dark-colored foods or drinks frequently. Your orthodontist can provide advice on how to avoid discoloration.
