What is a Root Canal?
The root canal procedure is done to resolve illness that cannot be addressed by other options, such as filling a tooth or putting a crown on it.
We may recommend a root canal to deal with an infection in the root of a tooth. This infection is usually caused by deep decay or a chip or crack in your tooth. The infection affects the nerves and tissues in the root of your tooth, causing inflammation, pain, and swelling.
What Happens During a Root Canal Procedure?
A root canal is a procedure that removes an infection from inside the tooth. A root canal procedure is also called an endodontic treatment. During a root canal, our dentist will access the interior of the tooth, remove the infected tissue and nerves, and place a special material into the tooth to seal it.
The root canal procedure is generally performed under local anesthesia. This means that our dentist will numb the area before the procedure begins. If you have dental anxiety, we could let you take over-the-counter anti-anxiety medications before the procedure to help you feel more comfortable. Once the anesthesia has taken effect, our dentist will start the procedure.
During the procedure, our Dentist Colorado Springs, CO will drill into the tooth and clean out any infection, then fill the tooth with a rubber-like material called gutta-percha. The tooth is then restored with a crown, which protects and strengthens the tooth.

With help from your dentist, you can preserve your natural tooth. A root canal is a safe and effective way of preventing tooth extraction and replacing it.
Is a Root Canal Procedure Painful?
You may have heard that root canals are painful. This may have been the case in the past, but with modern techniques and anesthetics, root canals can be done with little or no pain at all. In fact, root canals can actually save your natural teeth from extraction and allow you to keep your smile.
