What Is a “Happy Visit”?
Did you know that your child needs to see a dentist for their first examination within six months of getting their first tooth? That’s why our friendly team at Advanced Dental & Implant Center would love to see your child as soon as they have teeth. We will complete a happy visit to get them used to coming to the dentist. During this first visit, we will let your child explore (with supervision) our dental tools, the chair, and the other materials we use in treatment. They can get accustomed to the sounds, sights and smells of a dentist’s office and the care our dentists provide.
We will also make sure to introduce ourselves (the doctor, the dental assistants, and even the front desk staff) and get to know your child. Our team is happy to answer any of your child’s questions about dental treatment because we know that a pleasant conversation in a calm atmosphere can build trust and reduce the fear your child may feel at their dental visit. (We like to think of these conversations as kid-friendly dental school!)
Then, by the time they need sealants, fluoride treatments or fillings, they’ll know what to expect. We will also teach your child the right way to brush and floss every day so that they can have healthy teeth for life!

Common Signs of a Cavity in Children
Cavities are one of the most common dental issues for young children. If your son or daughter has never seen a dentist or if they haven’t had a checkup in a while, you may be wondering if they could have cavities.
The best way to know for sure is to schedule an appointment with our dental team for a pediatric examination. The second-best way to tell if your child has cavities is to look out for the following symptoms:
- They complain about a persistent toothache.
- Their teeth have dark brown or black spots that don’t go away with brushing (a sign of decay).
- Their teeth have white spots (an early sign of decay).
- They won’t eat hot or cold foods or drinks.
- They have persistent bad breath.
If you notice any of these symptoms in your child, bring them to Advanced Dental & Implant Center for a simple dental exam! Our experts will help your child understand what is causing their tooth discomfort and talk to you about the recommended treatment options.
Dental Fillings
Your little one’s teeth are prone to decay. And if this is not addressed on time, the decay may lead to cavities. We use dental fillings to treat the decay and cavity and restore the functionality and appearance of your child’s teeth.
The procedure starts with numbing their infected teeth, after which we remove decay and infection from the area. Once the decay is removed, we will use materials like ceramic, porcelain, or silver amalgam to fill the cavity.

Dental Cleanings
Dental cleanings constitute one of the essential parts of pediatric dental services. Visiting our clinic for regular dental cleaning of your little one ensures that their teeth remain free from bacteria and germs. This procedure also removes the accumulation of plaque and tartar from their teeth and gum line, thus keeping them clean. Dental cleaning involves scaling and root planing. We recommend bringing your little one twice a year for this treatment to maintain their dental hygiene.
Tooth Extractions
Children sometimes require tooth extraction during their growing years, especially when their teeth get so severely infected that no other procedure could save them. Another reason for tooth extraction in children is when they do not have enough room in their mouth for the new teeth to erupt. We perform both simple and surgical extraction on your little ones. Before the procedure, we give them sedation so that the treatment is carried out comfortably.
Dental Crowns
Dental crowns are the cap-like structures that we place on your child’s teeth in case of chipped, cracked, or broken teeth. Crowns also come as a rescue when their teeth are severely infected. The application of crowns restores and renews their badly damaged teeth. They can be made using any one of several materials, with ceramic being the most popular choice.
Pediatric Dentistry FAQs
When should I schedule my child's first dental visit?
We recommend scheduling your child’s first dental visit by their first birthday or within six months of their first tooth eruption. Early dental visits allow us to monitor their oral health, provide preventive care, and establish a positive dental experience for your child at our Colorado Springs, CO clinic.
How often should my child visit the dentist?
Regular dental check-ups are crucial for maintaining your child’s oral health. We generally recommend scheduling dental visits every six months. These visits allow us to monitor their dental development, provide preventive treatments, and address any concerns promptly to ensure optimal oral health as they grow.
What preventive treatments are available for children?
Our pediatric dentistry services include preventive treatments such as dental cleanings, fluoride treatments, and dental sealants. Dental cleanings remove plaque and tartar buildup, while fluoride treatments strengthen tooth enamel. Dental sealants are thin protective coatings that are applied to the chewing surfaces of molars to prevent cavities.
When should my child start brushing their teeth?
You should start brushing your child’s teeth as soon as the first tooth erupts. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and a smear of fluoride toothpaste. As they grow, teach them proper brushing techniques and supervise their brushing until they have the dexterity to do it effectively on their own.
What can I do to prevent cavities in my child's teeth?
To prevent cavities, ensure that your child brushes their teeth twice a day, flosses daily, and follows a balanced diet low in sugary snacks and beverages. Regular dental check-ups and cleanings are also essential for early detection and treatment of any dental issues.
Are dental X-rays safe for children?
Dental X-rays are safe for children when appropriate safety precautions are followed. At Advanced Dental & Implant Center, we use digital X-rays that emit minimal radiation and are specifically designed to minimize exposure. We take every measure to ensure your child’s safety and only recommend X-rays when necessary for accurate diagnosis and treatment planning.
How can I prepare my child for their dental visit?
You can help prepare your child for their dental visit by explaining the importance of dental care in a positive and age-appropriate manner. Reading children’s books about going to the dentist and role-playing dental visits can also help familiarize them with the process. Our friendly team will create a warm and welcoming environment to ensure their comfort and make their visit a positive experience.
What if my child is anxious or afraid of going to the dentist?
Dental anxiety is common among children, and our compassionate team is experienced in handling anxious young patients. We strive to create a relaxed and child-friendly atmosphere, using gentle techniques and clear communication to alleviate their fears. In some cases, we may recommend sedation dentistry options to help your child feel more comfortable during their dental procedures.
What dental services are available for children with special needs?
We are committed to providing comprehensive dental care for children with special needs. Our dentists are trained in managing and accommodating various special needs, and we offer a range of specialized services to ensure their oral health. We will work closely with you to create a customized treatment plan that addresses their unique needs and promotes their overall well-being.
How can I prevent dental injuries in my child?
To prevent dental injuries, encourage your child to wear a mouthguard during sports activities. Additionally, teach them to avoid chewing on hard objects and to take caution when playing or engaging in physical activities. Regular dental check-ups can help detect any early signs of dental trauma and ensure appropriate treatment if an injury occurs.
